An obsession with the self — evident by excessive use of the pronouns I and me — is responsible for the defeat and dismay we experience each day in a fallen world awaiting Christ’s return. Keith Wilson notes that Hitler’s speech that plunged Germany into war with Poland in 1939 contained the personal pronoun “I” 78 times. We too can easily be carried away by our obsession with the self. Yet we attain victory over the self through the power of the Holy Spirit.
